Hymen Repair

Hymen repair (also known as Hymenoplasty) is a procedure designed to repair and reassemble the ring-like skin membrane that covers the opening of the vagina.

The hymen is the thick layer of tissue which is situated around the orifice, it is usually present within young women and forms a barrier to the entrance to the vagina. The hymen is seen to be a token of virginity in some cultures, and can be an important factor in new marriages.

We at Hadley Wood Hospital can repair the ring surrounding the hymen. The procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic however a general anaesthetic can be opted for if the patient prefers, the procedure normally takes around an hour to complete.

It is a day case procedure and minimally invasive offering little scaring. The second layer of the hymen can be sown to cover the torn skin leaving the hymen intact.

After your procedure it is important to maintain your hymen after surgery as your wound will take some time to heal.

It takes around 4-6 weeks for a full recovery and you should avoid baths for a few days showering 24 hours after your surgery.

Your surgeon will advise you of the appropriate aftercare following your surgery and will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
