At Hadley Wood Hospital we also offer treatment and advice on common Gastrointestinal conditions. Our consultants are professionally trained with many years experience therefore can offer the most appropriate advice to our patients and tailor each service to their needs.

We offer services for the following gastrointestinal conditions:

Dyspepsia – commonly known as indigestion is where a patient suffers from discomfort or pain in their upper abdomen. It combines a number of symptoms which includes fullness, bloating, belching, nausea and stomach pains. It can also make the patient sick after food consumption. It is usually caused by your stomach being too sensitive or un-relaxed after eating or weak stomach muscles making it slow to empty food and liquid from the stomach. It can also be caused by food intolerances or allergies. You could be advised on changing your diet keeping a diary to see if you are intolerant to some food. You may also be given tablets if slow gastric emptying is suspected.

Heartburn/Acid reflux – Heartburn also referred to as acid reflux is a condition that occurs when acid in the stomach is pushed up into the the oesophagus, normally as a result of the ring of muscle at the bottom of this area being weakened. The oesophagus is not aswell protected as the stomach therefore the acid can irritate the lining. If your symptoms are frequent you should see a doctor, they can provide you with acid-surpressing medicines. Alternatively an operation can be performed to tighten the oesophagus and prevent acid from leaking up into the stomach but this will be determined by your consultant.

Nausea and Vomiting – Nausea (feeling sick) and vomiting (being sick) is common in most adults but usually is not a sign of anything serious. One of the most common causes of this is gut infection which usually lasts for one or two days. However if vomiting continues after a day or so you should seek advice from your doctor.
