Diarrhoea and Constipation
Diarrhoea is a condition where you regularly pass watery and loose faeces, depending on the cause some patients may have other symptoms of discomfort. This is common and can affect many people of different ages but majority of the time there is not much to worry about but it still can be unpleasant until it has passed.
Constipation is a common condition that can affect both adults and children. It occurs when you find it hard to empty your bowels completely. It can cause your stools (faeces) to become hard and lumpy. This can vary depending on the patient many people have constipation for a short period of time others will have it for longer (chronic) which can cause pain and discomfort. It is difficult to diagnose any exact cause of constipation but there are some factors that would contribute such as lack of fibre such as fruit and vegetables or cereals as well as a change in lifestyle or routine.
At Hadley Wood Hospital our consultants are professionally trained with many years experience therefore can offer the most appropriate advice to our patients and tailor each service to their needs.
To treat these issues it is firstly recommended that you make some diet and lifestyle changes, this will help allow the regular movement of the bowels, increasing your fibre intake daily along with your fluids. If ineffective your consultant will be able to prescribe you a laxative as medication which will assist in emptying your bowels. Some cases of constipation may take a while before you can establish regular bowel movement.
